Stephanie Shain serves as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA), headquartered in Washington, DC.
Stephanie leads lifesaving teams that provide direct care, rescue and protection to domestic and wild animals both in-field and within the shelter, community-based programs that offer ongoing support that help keep pets and their people together, crisis intervention programs from lost pets to assisting victims of domestic violence with their pet needs, and programs that make life better for people and pets such as behavior assistance and subsidized medical services.
Shain leads the strategic planning process, shepherds mergers and acquisitions, and drives the culture-focused and human resources work that are core to HRA’s success.
Prior to joining the HRA team, Stephanie was a Senior Director at The Humane Society of the United States where she launched HSUS’s Stop Puppy Mills campaign, coordinating efforts including investigations, legislative strategies, public education, and joint actions with law enforcement to rescue animals from puppy mills. She served as one of the organization’s primary media spokespersons.
Stephanie is compelled to improve the world for others and is an outspoken advocate for animal welfare and rights. Shain spent five years at the American Anti-Vivisection Society, and had previously worked within the shelter, veterinary, and education arenas to help companion, wild, and farmed animals.
